CSC Funk Band

CSC Funk Band

WFMU DJ Brandon Perry of Marty McSorley's Show says "By any name CSC is the real deal, a sweet spaced out, minimalist, heavy psyche funk collective rolling nine deep, compiled by Colin Langenus from USA is a Monster and Matt Motel from Talibam! which features many of the finest from the Brooklyn underground. Including Dave Kadden (Invisible Circle) playing an effected oboe that will send your brain into opium-drenched wanderings though your wildest Ethiopique dreams. Plus Jimmy Thomson (GWAR, Bio Ritmo, Alter-Natives, Hotel X, The Demands) on percussion and Matthew Clark on drums keeping time that will blow your mind, moving in and out of sick boogaloo breaks and head bobbing struts that are so good they make you want to smack a sucka."

Bio Ritmo

Bio Ritmo

"Neither today nor ever before has there been a salsa group quite like Bio Ritmo. The group plays, unmistakably, with the beat and attitude of '70s-era salsa dura (hard salsa). But the conventionality stops there. With a roster that includes former rastas, punks, rockers, and jazzistas, Bio-Ritmo can't help but bring an exhilarating unorthodoxy to its music. Take "Dina's Mambo,"from a new 45 RPM release on Electric Cowbell records, for example. On top of the underlying salsa beat, it contains slinky cinematic soul, a deliciously cheesy organ, a baroque sounding synth, giant bullfight fanfare horn shouts, Afrobeat-tinged breakdowns, and some delicious instrumental solos." Debo Band

Debo Band

Debo Band is an exhilarating eleven-piece Ethio-groove collective created as a means of exploring the unique sounds that once filled dance clubs of 1970s Ethiopia. Made popular through the renowned Ethiopiques series, the musical inspiration behind Debo Band is an unlikely confluence of Ethiopian pentatonic scales and vocal styles, American soul and funk, and the instrumentation of Eastern European brass bands ’Äì accordion, violins, horns, and drums. Committed to a broad range of musical collaboration, Debo Band recently performed with several traditional Ethiopian musicians at the 8th Ethiopian Music Festival (Addis Ababa, 2009) and 7th Sauti za Busara Festival (Zanzibar, 2010), and has, for the last year, worked with NYC-based producer and percussionist Kiddid, on a series of remixes, previously released as limited-edition cassette-only mixtapes.

Talibam!

Talibam!

Talibam! Is one of the most potent and fascinating bands in contemporary music. The six plus years of interplay between Mottel and Shea has created one of the most unique and exciting live shows and some of the most powerfully recorded documents of any era. At a time when most culture sticks to conservative niche opportunities, Talibam! is interested in expansion and exploration; They manage to part the sea by not sticking to genre, aesthetic predisposition or the usual norms of what being a ’Äòband’Äô is. More inclined to put on a show that any and all will like, and not be stymied by ’Äòavant’Äô type casting, they have won over both unsuspecting and in the ’Äòknow’Äô audiences worldwide. The energy of Kevin Shea’Äôs full steam drumming is not to be missed, nor is the primal tone of Mottel’Äôs synth run through a Marshall Half Stack. TALIBAM! is collaborating with some of the most accomplished musicians working today. On their past two studio albums, they have been joined by Cooper-Moore, Jon Irabagon (Thelonious Monk Jazz Saxaphone Award Winner 2008), Peter Evans and countless others monster players. Working with both jazz and rock musicians, Talibam!’Äôs former collaborators are in BATTLES, TV ON THE RADIO, GRIZZLY BEAR, WOODS, AKRON FAMILY, and more. Matt Mottel’Äôs visage should be familiar to anyone who’Äôs been going to shows in NYC in the past ten years. He’Äôs been hanging around NYC clubs since he was like 16, and dropping electric mind bombs with his synthesizer in those clubs nearly as long with folks like Awesome Color, Akron/Family, Jeffrey Lewis, Chris Taylor (Grizzly Bear), Kenny Wollesen, Chris Corsano, Ras Moshe, Cooper-Moore, Sean Meehan, and his new band Shadow Maps. Kevin Shea’Äôs drumming and stage gymnastics have been gazed at with wide wonder through his membership in bands like Storm & Stress (Touch & Go), Coptic Light (No Quarter), People (I and Ear), Peter Evans Quartet (Firehouse 12), Kyp Malone (TV on the Radio), Tyondai Braxton (Battles) Sexy Thoughts (rcarchives.com), Mostly Other People Do The Killing (Hot Cup), etc.

Greg Ginn and The Taylor Texas Corrugators

Gregg Ginn

Greg Ginn began in 1976 and hasn't stopped since! Founder of seminal punk rock group Black Flag and SST Records, Greg Ginn continues performing over 200 dates a year while recording and jamming pretty much the whole time in between in various incarnations. Ginn toured the U.S. relentlessly, forging the Oregon Trail of DIY, a coast-to-coast network that artists still rely upon today. The sound of guitarist Greg Ginn, for those who have heard him, is instantly familiar. That is, unless you can find another guitarist who manages to meld a nasty, gutbucket blues tone with rock edge and jazz thoughtfulness. His latest group, Greg Ginn & the Taylor Texas Corrugators, is an instrumental outfit that incorporate many styles into their music. Rock/jazz/country/blues/latin/psychedelia, all finding their way into the mix.

Spanglish Fly

SPANGLISH FLY is New York City's only band dedicated to cooking up the spicy musical dish called boogaloo! Two pounds of hot mambo stirred together with fifteen ounces of Motor-City Motown, deep fried for three hours and you get a bucket load of mouth watering soul latino, 1968 El Barrio style! "What Sharon Jones did for oldschool soul, what Antibalas did for Afrobeat . . . Spanglish Fly is doing for bugalu."--Lucid Culture

Superhuman Happiness

Superhuman Happiness

Superhuman Happiness is a group put together by Stuart Bogie, horn wizard for Antibalas, TV on the Radio, the Sway Machinery and many, many more. Stuart Bogie is currently the sax player in the Fela! musical and is producing upcoming tracks for Fela! lead, SAHR NGAUJAH. SHH's tracks end up sounding like instrumentals for bank robbing, beach combing, lamenting lost ideas, and running the sword of integrity through the heart of evil monsters who hunt for pleasure, despite having ever tasted such a thing.
